The purpose of the Business Recognition Program is to formally recognize excellent South Gate businesses that have contributed to the economic well-being of the City and have demonstrated a commitment to the vitality of South Gate’s business climate.

Nomination Criteria

  • The criteria used to select businesses for City recognition is listed below:
  • Creation of new full-time and part-time jobs
  • Generation of significant revenue for the City
  • “Legacy” business with proven longevity and history of doing business in South Gate
  • Significant business growth over the prior year
  • Introduction of a unique product or service innovation within their industry
  • Exceptional customer service as indicated by their customers
  • Proven contributions to the enhancement of the community and/or locally operating charities (examples include school mentoring programs, employee volunteerism, job/skills training programs, etc.)
  • Significant renovation or improvements to existing properties in South Gate
  • Construction of new permanent buildings exhibiting high-quality retail, office or industrial space
  • Demonstration of significant green business practices or improvements

City Recognition

It is proposed that six businesses, selected by staff and based on the aforementioned criteria, be honored by the City each year. Recognition would include the following:

  • Recognition at annual State of the City event
  • Presentation of recognition plaque at a City Council meeting
  • Site tour of the business by the City Mayor or appointee
  • Acknowledgment in City publications and on the City website

Award Eligibility

Any business located within the municipal boundaries of the City of South Gate is eligible to be nominated for an award. Businesses must have no outstanding City taxes, license fees or code violations.
